The northern portal of Preston Brook Tunnel

It's worth timing your arrival at the entry to Preston Brook Tunnel so as to arrive near half past an hour if going south (or on the hour if going north), not as we did, at quarter to the hour, having just missed the 'window' by five minutes. The tunnel seems to be anything but straight and when we entered was so smoky that it was like driving in thick fog - the only time I've ever hit the walls of a tunnel was here and was solely due to the poor visibility. Unfortunately, due to the ten minute entry window, you can't sit and wait too long for the fumes from previous passages to clear.
