From the Brentford direction. Above this point the Thames is semi-tidal: the tide has just reached the required minimum level above Richmond Footbridge, and the barrier is being raised. In the photograph, the righthand arch barrier is about halfway up. As they are fully raised, the barriers are turned through a rightangle and stored horizontally to maximise headroom. The white cruiser beyond the bridge has been waiting for this operation to be completed and the signal on the navigation arch to show that navigation is now safe. Richmond lock, which is used to pass the barrier when closed, is to the left of the picture.
