Title: Grouping Waterways in Europe
Post by: Shultzy on Nov 23, 2016, 06:33 PM
While rivers and canals in Poland have been entered onto CP, they have been listed under [Polish Canals] as they are then easier to \"Show all\" and edit as a group. Should the group [Polish Canals] be deleted and the waterways listed under [Mainland Europe] or should all the waterways be re-grouped under countries?

Interesting question - so many of the European waterways run across more than one country.....

Not that many in an ever increasing list. I've already listed the borders as a place so they could be split at that point. I've suggested it as at the moment you can't list say canals/rivers in Belgium and if you don't know what they are called they are difficult to find.

In general I approve of grouping - I've long wondered about putting all the isolated coastal rivers in a group to clear the top level of the UK.

I think the waterways that cross national borders are more of a problem though: It feels wrong not to have a \"River Danube\" somewhere, which all the parts belong to, but that can't be under any one country.   It similarly feels wrong not to find some of the Danube under Hungry or Austria or ...

There may be a clever way round it with aliases though although I'm not sure of exactly how to make it work.

Surely this, [Show all of the Rhine-Main-Danube-Black Sea] groups all of the elements onto one map is the way to go. It just means searching the [Waterways of Mainland Europe] to pick up each element. Shall I split them in Beta so you can see if it's viable?

See what you can do.  I think you're going to find we need a (probably fairly small) enhancement to allow references, because the individual parts won't fall under both their respective nations and the RMDB at the same time.

But beta can easily be reset from the master, so poke around with abandon and see how it looks.

I've created the following sections in Beta, and put the corresponding length of rivers in each:

German Canals
Austrian Canals
Slovakian Canals
Hungarian Canals
Croatian Canals
Serbian Canals
Romanian Canals

I've left the section [[Danube]] in [[Rhine-Main-Danube-Black Sea]], so whether it would be better to select all sections through [[Danube]] or another method, I'll leave up to you.
